Lee County Likes the Way LeeWay Does Business - FORT MYERS , FL, February 17, 1999

Today, the Lee County Department of Transportation released the results of two different surveys conducted in Lee County during December, 1998. A telephone survey was conducted with 400 random Lee County participants. The results show county wide name recognition with 92% of the respondents having heard of LeeWay and 87% having heard of Variable Pricing. A mail back survey was mailed to 10,000 LeeWay customers with 2,300 returning completed surveys. The 23% response is outstanding for this type of survey and shows there is a good deal of interest in this topic. This survey deals with customer and new services issues, and shows that 75% of the participants feel they have had above average or excellent experiences with the LeeWay Service Center. Additionally officials announced the Lee County project has been nominated in two categories for the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of America’s 9th Annual Awards Program. Out of 95 entries in 19 categories from across the country the Lee County Project has been short-listed in two Achievement Award categories: AWARENESS - ITS Publicity Campaign by a Public Agency and APPLICATION- Advanced Traffic Management Systems. The project team will be traveling to Washington D.C. in April to attend the awards banquet. Variable Pricing is a federally funded research project. The intent of this research project is to study ways to use the existing roads more efficiently, thereby decreasing the demand to build more roads throughout the country. At the same time, the reduction in congestion during peak hours will make traveling for those people who must travel during the peak periods, less stressful and quicker because there are fewer cars crowding the roads. This reduction in cars stuck idling in traffic during the peak hours ultimately reduces demand for new roads, reduces emissions, reduces fuel consumption, reduces stress, reduces lost productivity and reduces wasted time. By lowering the tolls during the Variable Pricing Discount times: 6:30 a.m. - 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and offering the toll reduction of 50%, the County provides an incentive to motorists so they will choose to travel at off-peak times, thereby reducing the number of vehicles crowding the roads at the same time.
