Lee County Commissioners Adopt an Alternative Work Policy

FORT MYERS , FL, June 30, 1998 --This morning, the Board of Lee County Commissioners approved the Alternative Work Policy. This policy won approval for several reasons: 1) to prepare for the implementation of Variable Pricing, 2) to create a more effective means of utilizing the work force and 3) to allow Lee County to offer a more friendly workplace. Lee County, by offering alternative work arrangements is taking a leadership role by encouraging employers and employees to maximize their efficiency by encouraging participation in flexible or alternative work arrangements. Employers and employees can optimize their flexible work arrangements by paying a 50% reduction in tolls during the Variable Pricing discount times. The Variable Pricing Program formerly called Congestion Pricing Program is one of ten federally funded grant projects to study ways to reduce congestion on the nation's roadways. These grants are funded by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). The intent of the Federal Government and ISTEA is to study ways to use the existing roadways more efficiently so that the demand to build expensive roadways throughout the country will be decreased. By varying the tolls (Variable Pricing), and lowering tolls by 50% during the non-rush hours, the county hopes to reduce the number of vehicles using the toll facilities during the rush hours. This reduction in tolls is very unusual, usually this type of pricing involves increases to peak hour trips, so the Lee County motorists are really receiving a bonus with this program. With the Alternative Work Policy, Lee County encourages managers to consider non-traditional work arrangements that will enable employees to balance work and life demands while maintaining or enhancing the work unit's ability to meet and/or exceed expectations. Making this policy available to Lee County employees will benefit the County in many ways. An alternative work arrangement can improve coverage, ensure job function continuity, reduce turnover, attract employees, expand and upgrade employee skills, provide cross training opportunities, reduce labor costs, reduce overhead expenses, improve productivity, services and morale.
